  1. UK Core Project – GEO 261Fall 2019Required to meet Global Dynamics-Citizenship General Education standards for the University of Kentucky: IV. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of citizenship and the process for making informed choices as engaged citizens in a diverse, multilingual world

  2. What you are going to do: • Individually, or in a group of two, prepare a Powerpoint mini-lecture of exactly fifteen slides on a global health issue. • There is no oral presentation, but the material should be formatted as if you were going to do so. • This mini-lecture must identify and describe some of the cultural, economic, environmental, social or political dimensions of a global health issue not covered in our lecture class. It can be a spin-off a topic we have already examined, but don’t repeat information already covered. • These mini-lectures are not just descriptions of a disease, the symptoms, and treatment – this is an exercise invoking cross-scale dynamics and scholarly disciplines from outside medicine.

  3. Your choice and specification of an issue requires careful thought: it should be simultaneously individual, local, and in a place – but it should also link to the global and other places. ‘Glocalize’ your issue. • Your issue also needs to be framed in one or more of these dimensions: gender, ethnicity, race, colonial legacies, global trade, technology gaps, legal inconsistencies among countries, ecological and environmental history, migration and mobilities, climate change, patent law, corporatization, international governance. • Your issue has to be presented with a visual component through use of data, maps, photographs and links to useful, stimulating videos • The topic has to be approved by your TA. Without that approval, your project may be doomed from the start. Their will be time in Friday recitation and through their office hours to obtain their guidance and approval.

  4. Bad topics • HIV • Already covered in class, and way too broad – you have to put more specific focus on place and relationships among them • Tick-borne diseases • Too broad, narrow it down to a specific tick-born disease, a country or region. • Tamarol addiction in Nairobi, Kenya • Better, but it could be too narrow unless you can make some connections to other countries, global trade, air travel, international laws governing pharmaceuticals.

  5. Bad topics • Bacterial meningitis outbreaks in colleges in the US • No US-only focused topics – there has to be a global, international component • Water pollution in Bangladesh • Do not do environmental topics unless they are strongly tied to human health and communicated in terms of economic, cultural, and social context. Although this is a class where the environment matters, it is not a class in environmentalism, per se, as important as this topic is. • Avoid any topic that is too overlapping with what has been taught in lecture.

  6. Assignment 1: Write a 250-word abstract describing your issue • From this point forward, come to your Friday recitation prepared to work on this project. • This abstract is due Friday, Nov 15th. Upload your abstract into Canvas by 11:59 pm of this day. • If working in a group of two, make sure to define your group before uploading. Instructions will be given in class as to how to do this. • Your abstract will outline the arc of your issue that you intend to flesh out in your Powerpoint slide. • Your TA will give you feedback before and after this submission, but the sooner you work with them to get your issue approved the better.

  7. Assignment 2: Submit a draft of your Powerpoint slides • Due Friday Dec 6th. Upload your Powerpoint file into Canvas by 11:59 pm. You are required to have your slides accessible in class on this Friday. • Use the template available from the class home page • Submission will be done as a group. • The expectation is that you will have enough content in your slides to allow your TA to offer suggestions. • It does not have to be complete, but the less you submit, the lower your grade. The more evidence there is that you have not been working on your project, the lower the grade.

  8. Mandatory guidelines • The final Powerpoint is due 5:00 pm the Friday of exam week, Dec 20th. • Work in a group of two and with a person who is in your same Friday discussion section. No groups of three. Individual work is permitted. • Upload your final submission into Canvas. A total of 15 slides will comprise each group’s submission. Use the Powerpoint template available from the class home page. • Place detailed explanatory text into the notes panel. • Upload only a single Powerpoint file • Use credible web sites for your research: .org URLs, governmental web pages, reputable media outlets (see accompanying slide, Google Scholar papers, and the peer reviewed literature. • Cite your URLs in the notes panel

You will be graded on formatting • No backgrounds, use a single, standard font (Arial, Times New Roman), no colored font, no colored backgrounds, no animations – do not adorn your slide, focus on content. • Do not embed videos, link to them • Crop your images or resize their dimensions proportionally to make them fit. Do not distort your image by stretching them. • Use high quality images • Organize/revise/edit your text • No submissions accepted as email attachments or hardcopies – they must be uploaded thru Canvas. • Label your Powerpoint file according to your last name. Each student must upload a submission.

  10. Use reputable online media outlets This is not an inclusive list, but provides a standard for you to follow: Associated Press, Reuters, BBC, New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, The Economist, Los Angeles Times, Deutsche Welle, The Christian Science Monitor, Nature News, Science News University research news websites and many large city newspapers are also useful sources.

How your grade will be calculated (100 points possible) • Preplanning (30 points) • 15 points: Abstract submission (due Friday, Nov 15th) • 15 points: Draft Powerpoint slides (due Friday, Dec 6th) • Content (50 points) • Appropriateness and conciseness of issue selected (10) • Presentation of background material (10) • Interpretation of multiple perspectives (10) • Level of complexity is college-level (10) • Sensitivity to context and differing viewpoints (10) • Formatting and delivery (20 points) • Appropriate slide style and effective use of data and imagery (10) • Quality of explanatory notes and references cited (10)
