Biodiversity • Very high plant diversity and endemism (13000 species and 6550 endemic) • The Goetziaceae plant family is only found in this area • All 170 species of amphibians are endemic to the Caribbean • 32 extinct species(13 species of birds and 19 species of mammals) • Worlds smallest bird(bee hummingbird) • Worlds smallest snake(Leptotyphlops)

  2. Human Impact • Deforestation began in the 1500’s for sugar cane • Introduction of foreign animals endangers native species(mongoose have devastated reptile/amphibian population) • 92% of amphibians on Haiti are almost extinct • Agriculture/deforestation is also a major issue
