What is BREEAM • The world’s longest established and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings - Created in 1988 and launched in 1990 • Over 200,000 buildings certified, over a million registered for assessment since it was first launched. • Network of over 4,000 independent licensed assessors across the world.
What is BREEAM In-Use? • An environmental assessment method for existing (in use) non-domestic buildings. • A standard (BES5058), easy-to-use assessment methodology and independent certification process • Identifies parts of a property portfolio that are under performing and may require refurbishment. • Improves environmental performance and building management • On-going assessment method to encourage continual improvements
Weightings and Star Ratings • Each environmental issue is weighted differently • BREEAM In-Use provides Star Ratings which vary between 1-6. <10% UNCLASSIFIED - >10% ACCEPTABLE >25% PASS >40% GOOD >55% VERY GOOD >70% EXCELLENT >85% OUTSTANDING
BREEAM In-Use KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) • Data input during assessment is used to calculate 10 KPIs • Outputs comprising of data relating to energy, transport, water and waste • KPIs represent a set of measures that focus on those aspects of environmental performance that can be used to measure consumption and emission targets • KPIs can act as a facilitator for establishing baselines and for organisational benchmarking against industry standards Note: The KPIs do not directly relate to the BREEAM In-Use ratings.
