What is Education for Sustainability? Environment Education for Sustainability examines how we can learn to live in more sustainable ways now and in the future. A future-focus lens in terms of sustainability can be achieved by exploring the long-term impact of social, cultural, scientific, technological, economic, or political practices on society and the environment. Society Economy
Using a future focus lens also requires transformative and action oriented teaching approaches that have a positive impact on student learning and that encourage reflective thought and action. These approaches include: • cooperative learning • inquiry-based learning • experiential learning.
These approaches to teaching and learning underpin the principles, key competencies and values of The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
The principles of education for sustainability revolve around the Key Dimensions of Environmental Education. • education in the environment • education about the environment • education for the environment Guidelines for Environmental Education for Schools (MoE, 1999). Our goal is to develop action competence of students.
What does EfS look like in schools? • Authentic learning environments • Engaged students • Student-lead learning • Integrated learning • Students taking action • Effective learning communities • within and beyond the school
What does an EfS facilitator do? • 5 EfS facilitators working in the Auckland Region • We provide support and guidance to teachers and schools to develop teaching and learning programs in an EfS context. • Pedagogy • Content knowledge • Relief funding for schools to allow in-depth planning and professional development. • Connections to external providers in relevant fields of interest (Waicare, Wastewise Schools, Trees for Survival, Park Educators, etc..)
