  1. Col. 3:16-17

  2. History • CHARLES SPURGEON was one of the greatest Baptist preachers that ever lived. He preached for the 10,000 member Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, London, England. He also refused to allow instrumental music wherever he preached. When asked the reason, he said "I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also! I will sing withthe spirit and I will sing with the understanding also." (I Corinthians 14:15) He then went on to add, "I would as soon pray to God with machinery as to sing to God with machinery! (ibid)

  3. History • "Leave the pipe to the shepherd, the flute to the men who are in fear of gods and intent on their idol worshipping. Such musical instruments must be excluded from our wingless feasts, for they arc more suited for beasts and for the class of men that is least capable of reason than for men. (Clement of Alexandria, 190AD The instructor, Fathers of the church, p. 130)

  4. History • "musical instruments were not used. The pipe, tabret, and harp here associate so intimately with the sensual heathen cults, as well as with the wild revelries and shameless performances of the degenerate theater and circus, it is easy to understand the prejudices against their use in the worship." (Augustine 354 A.D., describing the singing at Alexandria under Athanasius)

  5. History • "The organ in the worship Is the insignia of Baal… The Roman Catholic borrowed it from the Jews." (Martin Luther, Mcclintock & Strong's Encyclopedia Volume VI, page 762)

  6. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? John 4:24 1. “In spirit” = sincerely from the heart 2. “In truth” = according to God’s word (John 17:17). INTRO: What Is Acceptable Worship? • Matt 26:30; Mk. 14:26; Acts 16:25; Rom 15:9; 1 Cor. 14:15; Eph 5:19; Col 3:16; Heb 2:12; Heb 13:15; Jas 5:13 • Book, Chapter & Verse? ? ? ?

  7. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? A. Do You See Any Harm In… 1. Touching the ark (1 Chr. 13)? 2. Using fire from another place (Lev. 10:1-3)? B. We must obey God “I Don’t See The Harm In It.” 1. John 14:15 2. Matthew 7:21

  8. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? A. God’s Silence Is NOT Permission (1 Pet. 4:11). 1. Where does God say “not to”… - Burn Incense? - Baptize Infants? - Gamble? - Church Winery? - Animal Sacrifice? “Where Does The Bible Say NOT To?” 2. Ask instead, “Does God authorize it?”

  9. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? B. Specific Authority EXCLUDES: GENERIC SPECIFIC “Where Does The Bible Say NOT To?”

  10. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? A. What Else Would This Authorize? Athlete - church sports? Business man - church business? Gambling - church casino? Pig Farmer - church owned pig farm? “Playing Is A God Given Talent.” Consider the reverse: No singing talent - Should I refuse to try? B. Does “talent” authorize a practice?(Jn 4:24)

  11. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? A. Revelation is a very symbolic book “Instruments In Heaven” B. Even if instruments are in heaven, such does not prove they should be in the church.

  12. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? COMMAND AUTHORIZES ITEMS “No Authority For Playing Instruments”

  13. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? A. Old Law Not Our Authority (Col. 2:14). B. What Else Did David Do? 1. “Burnt Offerings” (Ps. 20:3; 51:19; 66:13-15). 2. Multiple Wives (2 Sam. 3:5; 5:13). “Instruments Used In O.T. By David.” DAVID DID! • Should the church sacrifice animals? • Could Dan have 7 wives?

  14. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? A. FACT: No command, approved example or necessary inference authorizes musical instruments in worship. B. FACT: To add to God’s word is sin (Deut. 12:32; Rev. 22:18-19). SIMPLE FACTS C. FACT: Instruments introduced by a pope in 670 AD (Am. Ency. Vol. 12, p. 688). D. FACT: “Singing (there was no instrumental accompaniment of any kind)” (Lorenz, Church Music, p. 217, 250, 404) E. FACT: A Cappella – Latin for “as the church”

  15. MAY WE USE INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP? A. Acceptable worship is “in spirit & truth” (Jn. 4:24). B. All we do must be authorized by Christ (Col. 3:16-17). CONCLUSION: Do you seek to please the Lord? (Heb. 11:6; Rom. 10:17)

  16. 1Ch 13:7 And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart. • 1Ch 13:9 And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled. • 1Ch 13:10 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.

  18. Act 15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Yemust be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: • 1Pe 4:11 If any man speak, lethimspeak as the oracles of God

  19. Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
