Mobile Learning Horton, Chapter 9 Team Trois
Mobile Learning is… People and the world Learning from all around us and all things around us; people, places and things Mobile individuals using mobile techniques and technologies to participate in established forms of learning • Starting with worthy goals; weigh risk against reward ($,$,$...) • Taking advantage of teachable moments; learn when you are ready and the situation presents itself • Ideal for “outdoor” subjects; astronomy, cooking or photography for example
Accommodating the mobile learner • Make learning healthier; learners can move around. This allows better blood flow and a better ability to concentrate and pay attention • Take advantage of any opportunity to teach; everyone has empty time while they are waiting for an event to occur whether traveling or waiting for an elevator. Seize the moment to teach. • Enable virtual attendance; few students outside university have the opportunity to attend classroom lectures. As I am typing this, virtual attendance is allowing me to participate from El Paso, TX. • Reduces cost for infrastructure; may translate to savings for students • The world is mobile and will become more so in the future
Adapt existing learning for mobile learners • Enable participation • Use an online meeting tool to record events ; make sure the tool works on multiple operating systems • Publish meeting results to cover those who are not able to attend; make meeting times convenient • Ensure materials are readable on mobile devices; make tap areas large enough and far enough apart • Use an appropriate forum to ask questions or make comments; ensure discussions take place over days not minutes and in smaller chunks of time, not marathon sessions • Open book tests and job aids work best • Ensure the entire course is in a virtual-classroom format; keep it simple – minimize typing
Adapt existing learning for mobile learners • Determine how people will submit homework and other deliverables; allow for easy upload and download • Assign a virtual study-buddy and require detailed profiles to include photo; make social learning mobile – think about tools to use • Design activities so all can participate • Post assignments well in advance and make them easy to find especially those deemed critical • Open book tests and job aids work best • Ensure the entire course is in a virtual-classroom format; keep it simple – minimize typing

Design Guidelines for Overcoming Limitations Make Mobile Learning: Engaging Effective
Design for Easy Reading • Provide overviews & summaries • Use headings & audio • Provide display adjustments • Use simple backgrounds
Maintain Contact with Learners • Provide 24 hour tech support • Text to communicate • Prompt teacher response • Classmate support
Design for Devices Learners Have Know what devices students have Design web content for several browsers Forego using rare features Test learning using multiple devices
Use Learners' time efficiently Maximize learning during travel Analyze data & draw conclusions Accept typos & abbreviations Explain the reason behind the activity
Fit Text & Graphics to the Display For small devices: Present only core material Use meaningful content Put secondary content at the bottom Reduce content display Use a brief version linked to a full version Test pages at small sizes
Design for Various Speeds and Network Connections Zip and condense Design for Hot Spot up to 4G Break content into small files Provide for on-device storage No time limits on tests Allow downloadable content for use without internet
Simplify Entering Text Relax rules of writing Replace questions with short answer Allow voice submissions Voice to text No time limits on tests Allow downloadable content for use without internet
Real Mobile Learning & Apprenticeship • We learn from the world rather than mobile devices, but mobile devices assist • Mobile devices have revived apprenticeship programs because you can be anywhere without the expense of being away from home Inject Mobile Activities into other Forms of Learning Mobile activities can occur within conventional classroom and e-learning lessons
