The Context of the Urban Diaconate • Review the video presentations at  The Places We Live • Diaconal Leadership models The Pastoral Epistles have much to say about leadership emergence, both ministry leadership (dealing with the spiritual) and diaconal leadership (dealing with the economic needs). There has been a perennial tension between these two sides of ministry throughout history, the most recent being within the Laussanne Movement which holds many world evangelicals together.

  3. The Biblical Material – the Deacon/ess in the Local Church • Review the passages in the pastoral epistles (Acts 6:1-6; Phil 1:1;1 Tim 3:8-12) on the qualities, functions and roles of deacons and deaconesses in the local church.  • How do these roles contrast with those of an elder or overseer (cc Acts 20:17-28; Titus 1:5-7; 1 Peter 5:1-2; 1 Timothy 3:1-7) • a. teach and preach(1 Tim 3:2;5:17) • b. direct the affairs of the church (1 Tim 3:5; 5:17) • c. shepherd the flock (Acts 20:28) • d. guard the church from error (Acts 20:28-31) ?

Modern Diaconates • In modern culture, a deacon is equivalent to a social worker or community development worker or economic development specialist.  Review the list of qualities of development workers in Bellingham. • Discuss Rich Slimbach's contrast of church-based community organization and community development in his article  Kindling Community Capacity .  What is the role of deacon/ess in each of these?

  6. 21st Century diaconal roles • Review Power Point on  The Kingdom & Community Development  and consider, What are the characteristics and roles of a deacon/ess? • Review the  Arshivad Kanti  Power Point and consider, What are the characteristics and roles of a deacon/ess? • Are the roles and qualities of deacons and deaconess outside the local church, in NGO's or globally the same or different?
