What is HISTORY? A Look at Definitions, Sources & Stories Mr. Prashant
Where does the word HISTORY come from? • The word history comes from Greekἱστορία (historia), “knowledge acquired by investigation” and from the Proto- Indo- European*wid-tor-, “to know, to see". • This root is also present in the English words wit, wise, and wisdom.
HISTORY defined: • History is the study of the past, with special attention to the written record of the activities of human beings over time. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyze the sequence of events, and it often attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events.
HISTORY is a record of what has happened in our past. What is the PAST?
The PAST includes everything that has ALREADY happened. So, the PAST does NOT include the PRESENT or the FUTURE.
Events that happen in the PRESENT (or NOW) are “Current Events.”Once the event is over, it becomes HISTORY. http://www.mantecabulletin.com/news/article/6771/
Why is HISTORY important? • History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life. – Cicero • The value of history … is that it teaches us what man has done and thus what man is and can do. – R. G. Collingwood
Why is HISTORY important? • “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it” -- George Santayana
Why is HISTORY important? • What events in history do we NOT want repeated?
Are historical accounts influenced by the people who write them? • ABSOLUTELY! • They write history from THEIR P.O.V. (point of view)! • There’s an old saying: “Only the winners write the history.”
So what have we learned? • The word HISTORY means WISDOM. • History tells about the things that happened in the PAST (things that have already happened). • CURRENT EVENTS tell about events in the present; HISTORY tells about them after they’ve happened.
So what have we learned? • There are many places to find information about current events and events in the past. • Always beware of WHO WRITES the HISTORY! Know your sources and their point of view. • And remember: “Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.”
HISTORY tells a STORY.(even though it’s not part of the definition!)
Do YOU have a story? Then you have a HISTORY!
Now, Today’s History Lesson is … HISTORY! The End Mr. Prashant
