Causes of the War • Lingering tension and hostility left over from the Gulf War in 1991 • Iraqi troops were forced out of Kuwait • Iraqi government agreed to surrender and destroy weapons • Over the years, Iraqi air-defense forces fired missiles and other weapons at the Allied warplanes in unsuccessful attempts to shoot them down • Terrorist attacks on the U.S. on 9/11/2001 • The U.S. government insisted on total Iraqi disarmament • In 2003, George Bush said that Saddam Hussein and his sons can either enter into exile within 48 hours or face military conflict • Saddam refused, therefore, Bush ordered war
