Construction • Dates back as far as 6th century BCE with TarquiniusPriscus (5th king of Rome) • The first official starting gate was constructed in 329 BCE • In 174 the starting gates were rebuilt • A spina was built to divide the track down the middle • 344 meters long • The Circus Maximus was wide enough for 12 parallel chariots to race

  5. Significance • Held chariot races and games during the religious festivals • (Ludi) • The races held were very popular and people had their favorite chariot or rider to support

  6. Destruction • In 31 BCE a fire destroyed the wooden structure • The fire was the first of 3 • The second fire destroyed the wooden shops surrounding the track in 64 CE • The last fire was in 164 CE • The last race was held in 549 CE • Very little remains of the Circus Maximus
