Indoor volleyball • Traditionally played with 6 players on each side. • You have 3 contacts to get the ball over the net onto your opponents side. • You can use your hands and forearms to play the ball, without the ball coming to a complete stop (catching the ball) • Popular in high schools all across America for girls, and in certain parts for boys.
Beach Volleyball • Traditionally played with 2 players on each side of the net • Played outdoors in the sand. • Also have 3 contacts to get the ball over onto the opponents side. Using your hands and forearms. • Weather plays an important role in playing this. • Less people on the court, which means more responsibility for the players.
Popular Volleyball Terms • Serve • The first contact of a “rally” where a player strikes the ball over the net from behind the end line • Bump • Refers to the passing motion when a player is receiving a serve. • Set • Usually the second contact, where the player uses their hands to deliver the ball to another player for the 3rd contact • Spike • The 3rd contact which is an aggressive attacking motion to get the ball to land on your opponents side.
