Identify the Need or Problem • Some are simple to id and others quite complicated • Criteria – Things that a design must do or include • Constraints – Limits placed on the design and designer
Gather Information • Look for information to help to design a solution • Why reinvent the wheel? • Talking, researching, surveying
Develop Possible Solutions • Most problems have multiple solutions • More solutions the better • Brainstorming – Group members suggest ideas out loud as they think of them as they are recorded. • After, the ideas are narrowed down to the best solution
Model the Solution • Two-dimensional or pictoral • Scale models • Appearance models • Functional models • Prototype • Computer simulations
Test and Evaluate the Solution • MUST BE TESTED!!! • Does it do what it is supposed to do? • Is it safe to use? • Will it last as long as it needs to? • Is the cost within acceptable limits? • Is it comfortable to use? • Is it appealing in appearance? • Does it fit the criteria and constraints?
Refine the Solution • After the test data • Look at necessary changes • Refine or improve the design
Communicate Your Ideas • Prove your design to be worthy of making • Presentation time • Time to shine • Drawing, prototypes, models, charts used to “sell your design”
Engineers: Designers of Solutions • Engineers use knowledge of science, math, technology and communication to solve technical problems. • Engineers have influenced most of the human-made world.
Types of Classic Engineers • Civil • Mechanical • Mining • Chemical • Electrical/Electronic
New-gen Engineers • Manufacturing Engineers • Aerospace Engineers • Materials Engineers • Environmental Engineers • Computers Engineers
Key Points • Human creativity is the driving force in creating technology. • Design is the process of creating things by planning. • The design process is what engineers use to solve problems. • Engineers specialize in many different fields, but all engineers are designers.
Review • Define technology • Describe the link between our needs and wants and the development of technology. • What need led to the Information Age • Describe the difference between inventions and innovations. • What are criteria and constraints? • Define brainstorming.
Review (continued) • List the steps in the design process • What knowledge does an engineer use to design solutions to problems? • What are five categories in classic engineering? • What is the difference between a manufacturing engineer and a materials engineer?
Assignment - choose 1 • Make a detailed sketch to show how a product you use could be improved . Then explain how the improved design would meet a specific need. • Investigate the work of a famous designer, inventor, or engineer. Prepare a poster showing that person’s accomplishments.
Assignment (continued) 3. Using the design process, explain how you would proceed to design a new kind of book bag. Be specific. 4. You are an engineer who designed a new ballpoint pen that writes upside down and under water. Prepare a presentation to a potential client who might manufacture the product.
