Pierre Curie • Born May 15, 1859 in France • Died April 19, 1906 in a street accident. • Married to Marie Sklodowska
Early life and work • He received his pre-university education entirely at home, taught first by his mother and then by his father as well as his older brother, Jacques. • By the age of 18 he had completed the equivalent of a higher degree at the Sorbonne, also known as the University of Paris, but did not proceed immediately to a doctorate due to lack of money.
Accomplishments • He gained his Licentiateship in Physics in 1878 • Industrial and chemistry schools • Pierre and Marie discovered that beta rays are negatively charged particles. • Pierre Curie, along with one of his students, made the first discovery of nuclear energy.
More accomplishments • Found elements Polonium and Radium while working with Marie Currie • Polonium- A rare and highly radioactive element with no stable isotopes. • Radium-discovered December 21, 1898 in a uraninite sample. While studying the mineral the Curies removed uranium from it and found that the remaining material was still radioactive.
