The MHI Post-Grad Experience Agenda • My background / what I’m doing at the Barrington Consulting Group (BCG) • How the MHI program helped me • What I wish I’d known before entering the program 2
My background • Undergraduate degree – BSc in CS with minor in History of Civilizations, University of Calgary, 1989 • Master of Health Informatics, Dalhousie, 2005 (2004 cohort) • Senior Consultant, Healthcare Practice, Barrington Consulting Group • Focus on planning and implementing systems for provincial EHR. Check out current state at: http://www.gov.ns.ca/health/EHR • Security and privacy of health systems – privacy impact assessments, policy, privacy breach detection 3
How the MHI program helped me Personally • Better knowledge of issues pertaining to healthcare in Canada • Better understanding of my spouse’s work • Chance to attend Grad School Professionally • Leverages my CS background • Recognized credential specialization • Allows me more control over the work that I do • Better understanding of issues and players involved in the work I am doing • Opportunities for my work to make a difference in society 4
Items to consider… • The program is only as good as you make it! • Find a theme / idea / project to pursue throughout the degree • Provide Raza and David with feedback, whenever you have something to say! • Choose a health-related project for your Project Management course • EHR vs EPR vs EMR vs PHR – see Nagle(handout) • Internship – If you’re doing one, start looking now • Use MHI alumni as a resource – MHI Grads Google group • Become a member of COACH (CDN$25.00), consider attending eHealth conference in May (> CDN$25.00) 5
