MC - Initial Training Networks (ITN) Reflections of a participant Bert Pluymers, Wim Desmet K.U.Leuven – Department of Mechanical Engineering Noise and Vibration Research Group http://www.mech.kuleuven.be/mod Marie Curie-dag - November 6, 2009
Noise and Vibration Research Group Department of Mechanical Engineering • 4 divisions • 34 professors • 20 postdocs • 150 researchers • 9 spin-off companies • 80 master students/year Noise and Vibration Research Group • 5 permanent staff members • 8 postdoc researchers • 35 PhD researchers • areas of research • - identification and analysis of (non-linear) dynamic systems • - active noise and vibration control • - numerical modelling (vibro-acoustics, structural dynamics, aero-acoustics) • - (intelligent) lightweight materials / structures
as co-ordinator Research group MC involvement as partner
MC-ITN ‘Mid-Frequency’ – facts and figures www.midfrequency.org overall objective: • develop an educational and research framework for the development of mid-frequency CAE techniques for NVH analysis scientific and technological objectives: • bridging the mid-frequency analysis gap • cross-fertilization of currently fragmented research activities • industrial applicability of various methods • bridging the gap between academia and industry • focus on noise and vibration analysis (in transportation/aerospace industry) • build up and disseminate mid-frequency knowledge to the larger EU community • developing a platform/community for mid-frequency PhD research
MC-ITN ‘Mid-Frequency’ – facts and figures • consortium K.U.Leuven BE (coordinator) ENS Cachan FR Univ. Cambridge UK Ecole Central Lyon FR INSA Lyon FR KTH Stockholm SE SAPIENZA Rome IT ISVR UK ViF AT LMS BE Daimler DE EADS Astrium ST FR • 12 partners • 7 nationalities • 01/10/09 - 30/09/12 • 468 ESR fellow-months • 48 ER fellow-months • 3.271.512 EUR HE RES IND
MC-ITN ‘Mid-Frequency’ – some ‘winning’ features of the proposal • reduction of fragmentation on a topic of European relevance • in line with research topics in top-down Collaborative Research Calls • strong interaction industry-research centres-academia • relevant university partners • relevant industrial partners and active involvement • clearly stipulated training/ToK programme • detailed recruitment policy • management expertise of the coordinator • fellow PhD trajectories
MC-EST-RTN-ITN – lessons learnt during the projects • recruitment is key!!! • eligibility criteria are tight and evolving • embed a management plan for solving recruitment issues • training of the Fellow is a crucial project outcome • consortium agreement is not mandatory • 100% funding, also for industry • initiate long-lasting relationships • recruitment is key!!! We gratefully acknowledge the European Commission for their support of the Marie Curie program, including the running FP7 Marie Curie ITN project 214909 “Mid-Frequency”
