  2. Joint complex • Hip – ball and socket • Closely associated the SIJ and lsp • Movements – flex, ext, MR, LR, add and abd • Joint is supplied from L3

  3. Bones • Femoral head 2/3 sphere fovea • Acetabulum Covers 40% of head • Neck of femur

  4. Anterior Ligaments • Capsule – complex, very thick and reinforced by : • Iliofemoral ligament – –Y • Pubofemoral ligament - triangular

  5. Posterior Ligaments • Ischiofemoral ligament – post • Other ligaments • Tranverse ligament • Crosses the acetabular notch • Ligamentum Teres - intracapsular - attaches to fovea -contains blood vessel

  6. Cartilage • Hyaline cartilage- covers head of femur and acetabulum • Labrum – fibrocartilage ring triangular in cross section, horse shoe shaped

  7. Anterior Musculature • Hip flexion • Iliopsoas • Rectus femoris • Sartorius • L1/2/3

  8. Posterior Musculature • Hip Extension • Gluteus maximus • Hamstrings • S1 • LR • Sup and Inf Gemelli • Obturator Int and Ext • Quadratus Fem • Piriformis

  9. Lateral Musculature • Abduction and MR • Gluteus medius • Gluteus minimus • Tensor fascia lata and ITB • L5

  10. Medial Musculature • Adductors • Adductor longus, brevis and magnus • Pectineus • Gracilis • L2/3/4

  11. Bursa • Psoas • Trochanteric • Gluteal (3-4)

  12. Dermatomes • L/2/3 front of hip • S2 back of hip • Neuro • Femoral nerve passes ant- beneath inguinal lig • Sciaitic passes posteriorly – below piriformis • Obturator – descends thro obt foramen, med thigh

  13. Surface Markings • Greater trochanter • The femoral triangle – the femoral pulse • ASIS • Blade and crest of ilium • TO attachment of adductors • Ischium
