1. CDSCO Creates a Veterinary Cell for Close Monitoring The human and veterinary medicines are controlled under the Drugs and Cosmetic Import India Act through supervision of CDSCO. Since many years, the experts of animal health have been demanding a separate unit and an efficient pharmacovigilance programme for this sector. Certain veterinary drugs were indeed banned, like diclofenac sodium and oxytocin, but there was no special unit to monitor all such vaccines and drugs. Safety of veterinary medicine is always an ignored subject and everybody fails to understand that drugs consumed by animals not only affect them but also the human population in many ways. Why it is important to monitor veterinary drugs and vaccines in India? Veterinary drugs and vaccines are used for treatment and prevention of animal disease. But its misuse can lead to serious health issues, in both animals as well as human beings. Some of the misuses that occur most commonly are introducing drugs of unknown quality, insufficient labelling of drugs, violation of specific requirements, failing to observe the withholding time, and using drugs beyond their expiry date. Several studies have proved that the adverse reaction of the drug in animals is one of the major concerns in India and it has significantly increased the animal mortality rate in our country when compared to other countries. CDSCO’s recent action to curb the misuse of veterinary medicines and vaccines Owing to this misuse, it was felt that there should be some regulations to supervise all drugs that are used on the farm and domestic animals in the whole country. Central Drugs Standard Control Organization or CDSCO has decided to start a veterinary cell to supervise the veterinary drugs and vaccines used for treating animals. The newly formed group is a seven-member team with a deputy drugs controller who will deal with matters related to oxytocin, use of antimicrobials in the veterinary sector and all issues related to aquaculture. The unit will also be in-charge of matters related to IVRI, ministry of agriculture and other work related to testing of all veterinary biology. To decentralise the inspection mechanism, this cell has also been made responsible for several other prolific tasks. Which includes marketing authorization, import and registration, CLAA activities, and field trials of veterinary vaccines and drugs. Moreover, the 7-member cell will also address issues related to recognition of CCS NIAH(National Institute of Animal Health), Baghpat as CDL for testing of veterinary biology.
