History of Green Initiatives at WCE • Some paper, cardboard, aluminum and plastic recycling for last several years. • In 2010-2011, full implementation of Denver Recycles program - all cardboard, paper, aluminum and some plastic (35 bins, 15 carts). • In winter of 2011, Autism classrooms began assisting with school wide recycling efforts. • In summer of 2011, Red Apple Recycling “Schoolhouse” was placed in east parking lot. • For 2011-2012, working on Metalware Swap and other waste reduction project
Red Apple Recycling • Red Apple was created to decrease landfills by recycling textiles • Saves about 1000 lbs/mo. per box • Red Apple gives $ back to schools that host for sustainability projects (over $10,000 so far) • Red Apple accepts: clothes, shoes, blankets, sheets, comforters/quilts, and purses • Located on the east side of Westerly Creek in the parking lot next to the book recycle bin
Swapping out Plastic for Metal Program • Program currently underway with plan listed below: • Goal – move from 7 garbage bags of waste a day to 3 (this goal includes possible composting project) • Biggest obstacles are getting donations and addressing accidental throw away • No extra work or loss with Kid Monitors helping • We will have enough metalware that there is no need to wash during lunch • Do we have support behind this?
Swapping out Plastic for Metal Program Donations Needed • Metal fork & spoon drive last year and this year • We have ~250 and need about 600 pieces • We need a bin for collecting the dirty metalware • We need “caddies” for the center of tables for little kids to put their dirty metalware • Large Green Sign for Student Monitor Schedule
Waste Reduction Grant • Denver Recycles helps students and staff think about how to critically reduce waste and change behaviors • Schools chosen in September or October • School contacts – Marnie Cooke and Marie Gruber to lead 5th grade students • Students will work with Denver Recycles to analyze waste stream and determine path forward • Composting? • Milk cartons? • Students will complete end of year assessment of effectiveness
Other Green Grants • Wal-Mart – local community contribution grants for environmental sustainability • Grants between $250-$5,000 • Propose a project we would like to tackle • Deadline - December 1 • Whole Foods – school garden grants • Grants for $2,000 • Students involvement required • Deadline – December 31 • Whole Foods – bag refund donation program • First-come, first-serve • Named environmental project to be funded
