What is Equilibrium? • Equilibrium is defined as the state of a body when it is at rest or in a non-accelerated motion when all the resultant force acting on it are zero and also when the sum of all torques about an axis are zero.
Conditions for Equilibrium • The resultant forces acting on a body must be equal to zero. • The resultant moment of forces acting on a body, in all points must be zero.
Principles of Moments • When a body is in equilibrium, the sum of all anticlockwise moments of any points must be the same as the sum of all clockwise moments of the point.
Couple • When two parallel forces which are equal and opposite are not acting on the same line, a couple is formed. • The moment of couple is equal to the product of either force and the perpendicular distance between the line of action of both the forces.
