“Be kinder than necessary...for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” -unknown
RESPECT YOURSELF • Come to school on time. Please do your best to arrive no earlier than 8:45 AM. • Be responsible with homework and handouts from your teachers and the office. Handouts will go to the youngest or only this year. • Use your planner everyday in every class. Ask your parents to pay the school fee to get your planner. • Maintain a clean locker… magnets only. • Shower and wear deodorant daily. • Dress respectfully
The SCC serves as a guide to deal with inappropriate behavior at school. Your responsibilities: Read through this booklet with a parent. Sign Appendix H, cut it out and give it to your teacher. Teachers will file Appendix H when they are returned. Behave appropriately to ensure your safety and the safety of everyone at Garvy. Student Code of Conduct
HIGH EXPECTATIONSWe expect appropriate behavior at all times. • Every student at Garvy has the right to a safe and valuable education. The whole Garvy family must show INTEGRITY and RESPECT at all times. • Treat others how you would like to be treated. • Remember that everywhere you go, you are a Garvy Bulldog. Be proud of it!
With our goals in mind, we need to think about the following: • I will refrain from bullying of any kind • I will refrain name call • I will refrain from internet bullying or inappropriate text messaging • I will respect myself, others, teachers, staff, property • I will chew gum only after 3:00 PM • I will keep all food in the lunch room • I will use appropriate behavior in the hallways • I will tell an adult if I see a weapon of any kind or hear about one in the school • I will work out my issues with people instead of fighting • I will obey the NO SEE, NO HEAR cell phone policy • I will use appropriate language while present in school and on Garvy property, especially when younger students are present
School Rules Each classroom has a set of rules. Students are to respect the rules at all times. • Rules while outside of the classroom include: • Always walk in the hallways. • Use quiet voices in the hallways – especially in the lunch line. • Respect all school property. • Have respect for others while walking in the hallway. • Follow the dress code. • Go directly to your destination. Do not stop at the bathroom unless it is an absolute emergency. • In order to use the restroom (grades 5-8), you will have to sign in and out and go alone. You may not use the restroom during instruction time unless it is an absolute emergency. • Talk to you teacher about when you can visit your locker during the day.
MORNING ROUTINE All students in grades 5-8 will gather in the basketball area and on the sidewalks around Door 2. Students will arrive to school no earlier that 8:45 AM when outside supervision begins. When the whistle is heard, students will be called into the building by floor with the 2nd floor going in first. Students will go directly to their lockers and prepare for the day. There will be no basketball playing in the morning from 8:45 – 9:00 AM. During the first week of school, your teachers will meet you outside. All 5-8 grade students will enter and exit the building from Door 2 only.
Lunch Routine • When you enter the building for lunch, students who brought their lunches will enter first, followed by students buying a lunch. • QUIETLY line up in the hallway in TWO STRAIGHT lines. The line closest to the wall will be the line for students who brought a lunch to school. The line to the left will be the students that have a ticket. • If you lost your ticket, you must go to the end of the line. If you need a new ticket, see Ms. Helen and you will have to buy a new one. Be responsible with your ticket and respectful to the lunch staff. • When you line up for lunch, you must remain quiet. There are primary classes going on during your lunch time.
Lunch Routine cont. • Students are to remain seated at all times in the lunchroom and use conversation voices. • Assigned seats will be given to those who can’t follow lunch room procedures. • Please throw your own garbage in the trash when you are dismissed. • When the whistle blows, please quiet down. You will be released by tables. • Classes are in session, so the hallways must remain quiet. • It is very important that you eat lunch everyday. • Energy drinks are not allowed at Garvy.
Dismissal Routine • You must check in with your homeroom teacher and follow his/her rules of dismissal. No student should ever leave the building without being dismissed by their teacher. Teachers will be walking you out of the building daily. • There is very little room outside of Door 2. Please go directly home if you are walking. If you are waiting for a ride, please walk further down the sidewalk to avoid the congestion…
Misconduct Procedure • For most minor accounts: • Verbal warning and a call home from your teacher or the administration • Detention • Suspension
Detention Policy • Detention will be held from 3:00 – 3:45 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Talk to your teachers to see if they are using detention this year. • If you earn a detention, you will be given a detention slip. The slip must be signed by you and your parent. The slip must be brought to your detention. • Failure to attend detention can result in additional detentions and ultimately a suspension.
Dress Code • Posters in all classrooms • Posted on the Garvy website • In your student handbook (planner) www.garvy.cps.k12.il.us
Internet Bullying/Texting • If your internet actions or text messages affect the educational process of the school day, you will be accountable for your actions. • Education Process: Every student here has the right to an appropriate education. If they are affected by what you say or write about them on the internet or in a text and it interferes with their schooling, we have a problem. • Use extreme caution with what you write on the internet. • TREAT OTHERS HOW YOU WANT TO BE TREATED.
