Financial support to young women • Over forty percent of the young women and mothers who attend ELF MTT training programs need financial support. Financial support means different things to different people. • For some, ELF MTT is the only opportunity for gaining a qualification. • We, the ELF team, endeavour to never turn away potential “teachers” who have the drive to make a difference to themselves, their families, their communities and the world.
Training of Montessori teachers • ELF Montessori focuses on enabling women to be professional educators through hands-on training and on-going support in their classrooms. We aim to grow professional South African Montessori teachers who can shape the learning environment for the child’s optimal development. • ELF Montessori’s qualification is unique as it enables young women to work in Montessori and mainstream schools, increasing their employment opportunities. We offer two qualifications: A Dual Pre-Primary Diploma: • Montessori 3-6 Pre-primary Diploma AND National Diploma in ECD (ID Number 23118): Level 5 (240 credits) [Part-Time, Full-Time and Distance Learning options available] A Dual Toddler Certificate: • Montessori 0-3 Toddler Certificate AND Further Education & Training Certificate in ECD: Level 4 (CORE) (64 credits) [Part-Time Courses are offered – Full Level 4 Certificate (ID Number 58761) also available]
Jo’s School Funded By: Department of Social Development and private funders Date: 2016 onwards • Housed in the Vrygrond Centre built by the Elton John Aids Foundation, Jo’s School has a positive influence within this impoverished community where there is a very high incidence of AIDS, unemployment and substance abuse. The school provides a safe and nurturing learning environment for 60 Aids-affected and vulnerable 3 to 6-year olds. The children receive a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch, as well as two snacks daily; and they have access to quality Montessori materials. The school also provides safe, after-care facilities. • The children at Jo’s school are a constant source of inspiration to us. Against all odds they come to school each day and embrace all that is Jo’s School and are happy in the stimulating, secure and caring environment created for them by our dedicated staff. The school is dependent on funding to ensure that the poorest of poor and most vulnerable receive quality preschool education and access to good primary schools.
Forever Educare in Samora Machel Project Lead: Mandisa Mamputa Funded by: Life church and ELF MTT Date: July 2018 - on-going • Mavis Mtata approached ELF Montessori Teacher Training for advice and support for her new preschool in the informal settlement of Samora which is located in Phillipi in Cape Town. The school is located in a community with high unemployment, HIV, and low infrastructure support from the city of Cape Town. Mavis was given an opportunity in 2018 by Rotary in Claremont and Lewis Furnishers to transform the school from containers to a proper brick and mortar building with a kitchen, office, playground and four classrooms. ELF MTT's three year plan is to: • Register the school as an ECD site, which will enable the school to access the child subsidy grant. With the grant, the children will receive nutritious meals. • Develop quality management structures including financial management • Provide curriculum support • Mentor new teachers with record keeping, classroom management, classroom design and aesthetics • Provide didactic materials for the classrooms (1-3 and 3-6 years)
Seapoint Montessori Project Lead: Shamiemah Jassiem Funded by: ELF Montessori Date: January 2019 onwards • Recently adopted by ELF, Seapoint Montessori is a little school nestled in the Anglican Church. • ELF was approached by the existing owner to assist with the management of the school, both in terms of finances as well as the academic programme. • The school serves an international community as well as locals. • ELF’s role is to harmonise and beautify the space with Montessori materials and to provide a much needed service for children from eighteen months to six years old. Through ELF’s involvement, we are aiming to attract more parents to the school and increase the number of children in attendance.
Mentoring • ELF MTT offers a mentorship programme to Montessori Preschools. Through this programme, more experienced and less experienced Montessori guides share their skills, gain insight, motivation and a deeper sense of satisfaction in their classroom practice. • The mentorship programme considers the "whole" school community and provides support with management, record keeping, classroom practice and design and layout of the environment.

Why Montessori? • Early childhood is the formative age of human development and the quality and richness of the educational environment that children are exposed to shapes the adults that eventually enter society. Montessori education embraces the latest scientific research into child development, which shows that children learn by the work of their own hands with the support of adults in a safe, welcoming environment. • Montessori education places a substantial emphasis on the quality and richness of the child’s environment, incorporating beautiful, tactile materials which support the child’s learning of abstract concepts. • Montessori education embraces the holistic development of the child and is designed to align with children’s basic tendencies towards independence, hard work, concentration, exploration, wilfulness and creativity. In Montessori, the teacher is part of the environment and she models constructive and appropriate behaviour for the children. • As the Montessori approach involves a complex understanding of child’s developmental needs, the requirements for a safe, enriching environment and a process of personal transformation on the part of the teacher, a solid training course is essential. ELF Montessori answers the call for this type of training, which we believe, adds significant value to society.
