  2. Sequence Meaning: the order in which things happen Used when listing events or what happens in time order. When ordering events in sequence use chronological order. Words used: first, then, finally, next, later, after Sequence is used in biographies, history books, and recipes.

  3. Answers Open your PSSA Coach books to page 129. 1a. According to the passage, which of the following do Kevin and Jin do first? Answer: B 1b. Which of the following details would be the best one to add to the third paragraph? Answer: D 1c. What do Kevin and Jin do after their cookie batter is mixed? Answer: D

  4. Problem and Solution Basic problems(what is wrong) are listed and the solutions(how the problems can be solved) follow. It is useful for examining how obstacles can be overcome. Words used: need, improve, attempt, help

  5. Answers Open your PSSA Coach books to page 136 and read Example 1. 1a. What problem did Will Smith face early in his career? Answer: B 1b. How did Will Smith solve his problem, according to the passage? Answer: C

  6. More answers Now turn to page 137 and read Example 2. 2a. What problem does the passage present? Answer: A 2b. What solution to the problem does the passage present? Answer: C

  7. Comparison and Contrast Explains how two topics or things are alike or different Useful for making connections between two topics. Comparing Words: same, similarly, like, also Contrasting Words: but, on the other hand, unlike, however

  8. Examples 1. This type of steel has vanadium in it just like 1095. Comparing the two types of steel. 2.That fruit is juicy, but this fruit tastes like a balloon. Contrasting the two fruits.

  9. Answers Write a response to the following question on page 143. 3. In which ways are these passages alike? In which ways are they different? Use two examples from the passages in your response.

  10. Example Response The passages are both alike and different in many ways. To begin with, they are alike because they both have the same topic, which is the ocean. Additionally, they are different because Cleaning the Ocean talks about cleaning up the ocean and getting rid of pollution. However, In the Deep talks about species that can adapt to life on the bottom. In conclusion, that is how both passages are alike and different.
