  3. Puberty • Time of growth and change • Can start between 9 - 16 for girls & 10 - 17 years of age for boys • Glands in the body start making hormones • Hormones cause • Body changes • Ups and downs of feelings

  4. The Hypothalamus & Pituitary These areas of the brain begin all the changes!

  5. Testicles grow Pubic hair appears Penis & scrotum grow Voice changes Armpit hair grows Sexual feelings First ejaculations Growth spurt Weight gain Facial hair Adult height Emotional changes In Boys

  8. How do you respond when.. • Your mom gets upset with you? • You and your best friend get into an argument? • You feel bad for no reason at all? • People start pressuring you to drink?

  9. Puberty: Emotional Changes When you feel down, what makes you feel better?

  10. Getting through emotional changes of puberty • Do you have a friend with whom you can talk? • Do you have a favorite song that inspires you? • Do you like to work out or run? • Do you have a favorite book you like to read? • Do you participate in any extracurricular activities or groups?

  11. Normal Teen Concerns Is my body normal? Do other people my age have sexual thoughts or feelings? How tall will I be? When will I be able to date?

  14. Menstruation (Having periods)

Menstruation Estrogen and progesterone prepare the lining of the uterus for pregnancy If pregnancy does not occur, this lining is shed (removed) Lining made up of blood & tissue Passes from uterus through cervix & vagina to outside of body Tampons (inserted in vagina) & sanitary pads (attached on underwear) absorb blood & tissue Process repeats about once a month to create this new lining If pregnancy occurs (the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining), a period does not occur

  17. Important Definitions • Vaginal Intercourse –when a man’s penis is placed inside a woman’s vagina • Ovulation –when the ovary inside the woman’s body releases an egg • Ejaculation –when a man releases semen (the fluid containing sperm) from his penis

  18. Important Definitions Fertilization– the joining of the egg and sperm in the fallopian tube

  19. Important Definitions Implantation –when the fertilized egg travels to the uterus and attaches to the lining of the uterus

Let’s Review How a Female Gets Pregnant • Ovulation(egg released by ovary) must occur • Vaginal intercourse with ejaculation (sperm released in vagina) around the time of ovulation • Egg & sperm have to unite in fallopian tube(fertilization) • Fertilized egg has to implant in the uterus(implantation)

  22. Why do some teens get pregnant? • Think it can’t happen to me • Sex not planned • Think it will help keep their boyfriend • Want to have a baby • Think it shows love STAND UP FOR YOUR FUTURE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS!

  23. Getting through puberty • Expect ups and downs • Talk to others • Get enough sleep • Eat healthy • Exercise • Get involved in school & the community • Avoid risky behaviors • Choose friends based on positive influence, NOT negative peer pressure or popularity
