Introduction to programme • WELCOME YEAR 9 STUDENTS! • THE DIRECTING MASTERCLASS BEING RUN IS ONE OF THREE MASTERCLASSES TO BE RUN BY THREE OF THE BFI FILM ACADEMY’S RECENT GRADUATES, WHO ALL IT HAPPENS GO TO TWYFORD! • THIS IS THE LAST MASTERCLASS OF THE WEEK, THE PREVIOUS SESSIONS WERE SCREENWRITING ON MONDAY RUN BY SCREENWRITER JOSH GILL (FROM YEAR 12), AND CINEMATOGRAPHY ON TUESDAY RUN BY AMARA ENO (FROM YEAR 12 TOO!). • THE REASON WE’RE RUNNING THESE WORKSHOPS IS THAT FOR THE SECOND UNIT OF OUR QUALIFICATION IN FILM, WE ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE UP AN ARTS LEADERSHIP ROLE WITHIN OUR SCHOOL OR EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENT, SO WE AGREED ON CREATING THESE WORKSHOPS AND ALSO A SCREENING / Q&A DISCUSSION WHICH IS BEING HELD TOMORROW LUNCHTIME IN B25. 3. Let me tell you a bit about myself… • I am a self-shooting Director, Broadcaster and Journalist from West London. • I have been making films for over 6 years and for the past 3 years I have been working commercially and freelancing as a filmmaker and have worked with clients such as Channel 5, The British Film Institute (BFI) and Eastside Educational Trust. • I have a passion for all things media, whether it be in Film or Television or Radio and magazines. I shoot, edit and publish my own work and have collaborated with like-minded friends on shoots such as feature films which I have done. I started out as a photographer and since then have gone into moving image.

6. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A FILM DIRECTOR? • The Director is the driving creative force of the film, everyone is working for the director and his/her creative vision on a film. • It is up to the director to work with the various departments on a film in order to come together to achieve a common creative goal – which is the film itself! • They are responsible for creatively translating the film’s written script (whether its written by them or a screenwriter). • A Director’s main duties include; • Casting, Script Editing, Shot Composition, Shot Selection and Editing. • In some cases, Directors can choose to assume multiple roles such as Director/Producer or Director/Writer. • Directors are ultimately responsible for a film's artistic and commercial success or failure.

SKILLS • Directors must have exceptional artistic vision and creative skills to develop an engaging and original film. • They must inspire and motivate the team to produce the film they have envisioned. • A capacity for long hours of intensive work, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm and think clearly under great pressure, are key skills for this role. What the director should know… (+ how to do!) Some directors may get involved with this… particularly for shorts! 12. or television… A FUTURE IN FILM Work Experience in the Summer? • Get talking to some production houses and establish connections with them. (Look online, phone them up, visit them in person!...) • You will most likely work as a runner as your work experience, that involves doing errands for the various crew on site such as the Director! Do you want a career/future in Film? GCSE / A Level / BTEC Pathways? • Would you consider GCSE Media Studies in Year 10? • Some Year 9s will already be taking GCSE Photography and will continue this into Year 10. • At A Level at Twyford you can do Media Studies or Photography, which will further your knowledge in those areas. • Alternatively, if you decide Twyford isn’t for you. College is recommended if you want to take up a vocational course (BTEC) or alternative A-Levels • The college option tends to be better if you are looking to use dedicated facilities, and undertake more practical work and work more independently. Level 1 – NC Level Level 2 – GCSE / BTEC Level 3 – A Level / BTEC National/Extended Diploma National Framework ? Be optimistic! But realistic at the same time! What Next ?

Its members have expertise in Photography, Videography, Live Event Coordination, Journalism and Broadcasting and continue to serve the school as well as being open for public viewing via various social media forms. Eligible to join from Year 9 The Twyford Technical Team have been masters of providing exceptional lighting and sound to assemblies, drama productions and specialist annual events such as The Popular Music Competition and the school’s annual production.
