Authority • Commission established by Executive Order No. 97-03, June 1997, issued by Governor Benjamin Cayetano • Determination of tax exempt status under IRC as a 501 (c) (3) organization, December 1997 • HSHOF designated “state museum for sports history in the islands,” Section 2, Chapter 109, HRS, May 30, 2003, signed into law by Governor Linda Lingle

  3. Mission Statement The Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame is “the state museum for sports history in the islands.” It is a nonprofit, educational partnership with the State of Hawai'i. Its purpose is… to record for all time, with pictures, videos and in cyberspace, the outstanding accomplishments of Hawai'i’s world-class athletes. The Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame is best described as an educational repository created to enshrine athletes, pioneers and contributors of Hawai'i’s rich sports history; such a repository of former athletes encourages our youth to emulate these outstanding men and women for their devotion, dedication, pursuit of athletic excellence and steadfast character.

Commissioner Responsibilities • Appoint Selection Committee members • Ensure integrity of selection process • Coordinate annual selection meeting • Approve annual selections • Coordinate annual induction banquet • Assist Executive Advisory Board with fundraising banquet table & golf team/sponsor sales

  7. Selection Committee Responsibilities • Meet once a year in December to select new inductees • Assure new inductees are finest & most qualified representatives of sports in Hawai'i

  9. Selection Criteria “The nominee must have exhibited strong character and discipline in representing the State of Hawai'i throughout their careers to be considered. Conviction of any felony, crime of moral turpitude or official sanction by governing body of the nominee’s sport during participation will automatically nullify his/her nomination.”

Automatic Qualification • Olympic Medalist • World Record Holder(Sanctioned Associations) • Inductees of Recognized International or National Hall of Fames • Professional Athletes • Voted to association all-pro teams • Members of a world championship team • Residency: Must have a strong local connection As a guide, an athlete should be retired from his/her qualifying sport for 5 years before selection and induction.

Contingent Qualification • Significant participation in the development of an athletic program (pioneers & contributors) • Winners on the PGA, LPGA, Senior PGA & JPGA Tour • World champions of Windsurfing, Surfing, Sumo & any sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee or sanctioned by the HSHOF Commission As a guide, an athlete should be retired from his/her qualifying sport for 5 years before selection and induction.

Commissioner Guidelines • Only nominations transmitted to, processed & researched by the Executive Advisory Board may be acted on for action by the Selection Committee • Only selection criteria may be used as the basis for selection/non-selection • Contributor/Pioneer inductees may not exceed 25% of total inducted into the HSHOF • Guideline for Contributor/Pioneer inductee selection consideration – participation in the development of a sports program for 30 years & over

Executive Advisory BoardResponsibilities • Provide organizational compliance, administrative & logistical support for Commissioners & Selection Committee • Assist Commissioners with coordination of annual induction banquet • Coordinate annual golf tournament fundraising event • Other responsibilities as directed
