  2. Mission • Protects all native animals and plants in their natural communities • Protect and Restore America’s native wildlife • Work across national borders • Educate and mobilize the public

  3. History • In 1947, Defenders of “Furbearers” was founded • Later called Defenders of Wildlife • Began with only once full-time employee and 1,500 members • Job was to protect coyotes and other furred animals from leg hold traps and lethal poisons

  4. Today • Defenders of Wildlife are based in Washington DC • Travel to different countries and sites to get a first hand look on the land they protect • Have offices in 8 states and in Canada and Mexico • Protects all native wildlife

  5. Accomplishments • Worked to pass federal legislation to end the aerial shooting of gray wolves in Alaska • Enhanced protections for wildlife in our national forests • Increased habitat protections for nesting shorebirds and securing safeguards for whales • Banned the capture and sale of Mexico’s wild parrots • Protected habitat for endangered Florida panthers
