  2. Background • First celebrated in 1922, on the fourth anniversary of the creation of the Red Army • It’s celebrated on Feb. 23rd.

Vladimir Lenin signed a decree for the creation of the Bolshevik Army on January 15, 1918 • In 1938, Soviet history books claimed that the Red Army won a battle against Germany On February 23, 1918 • There was no evidence to this claim so the Russian Parliament took it out from being one of their holidays, in 2006.

  4. What it could be known as? • February 23 is considered Men’s day. This is because the men are obligated to severe in the military. • Women often give presents to their male relatives. Even if they never served in the military. • Russian authorities organize small parades for the soldiers. • Women are starting to challenge this day as more and more join.

  5. Gifts • Women often give gifts like socks, cologne, or watches. • Women cook or plan celebratory dinners • Kids give cards to there male teachers • Flower and chocolates are not usually given as gifts

  7. Names • In 1919, it was known as Red Army Day • In 1923, it was officially named the Day of the Red Army and the Navy • In 1949, it was renamed Soviet Army and Navy Day • In 2002, it was renamed Defender of the Fatherland Day

Womens’ Day • Because the Day of the Defenders is known as Mens’ Day because of men’s “dominant” numbers in the military, Women’s Day is another day—March 8th. • Even though women fighters are also celebrated on Day of the Defenders day, Russians wanted the women to be honored. • Mothers, children, and grandmothers are celebrated on this day.
