Presentation outcomes • Inspire confidence to plan Computing across your school’s curriculum • Provide examples of how Computing can be used to enrich and enhance learning across the curriculum • Demonstrate progression across the primary phase
Overview • Why embed computing across the curriculum? • (How) Literacy and numeracy examples (CS) • Task 1: Ideas for literacy and numeracy • Topic examples (CS) • Task 2: Ideas for topic • Next steps and questions
Why cross-curricular approach? Purpose & context for computing Time constraints of curriculum BLANK PAGE Stimulate/scaffold learning Vs
Stimulus We say ‘We are going to write about…’ Purpose J. Cabot My Diary Skills AFL Fun 24th June in the year of our Lord 1497, Land sighted… Modelling Practise Progression Examples Strategies Context Framework
Literacy KS1 • Computational thinking: Pupils thinking algorithmically • Oral instructions with EYFS/KS1 developing directional vocabulary (blindfolded hide and seek & guiding robots around mazes) • Instructional writing (CT skill of decomposition along with thinking algorithmically) • Algorithms written as short narratives
Literacy • Animations in Scratch (sequencing) • Interaction between characters (selection) • If sprite one touches sprite two then … • Quest story game with levels • (variables for reward, lives) • Literacy > computing • Computing > literacy
Literacy • IT and DL Animations Film Multimodal ebooks
Numeracy • Pupils write algorithms to trace shapes (investigate patterns) • KS2 pupils create learning games for younger pupils • Pupils program their own calculators or teaching tools (developing understanding of number and calculation processes) • Pupils write out algorithms for written methods of calculation – turn their partner into a calculator! • Investigate the numeracy behind the ‘playability’ of games
Numeracy learning games Can pupils alter this game to change the numeracy objective?
Numeracy How is ratio important in this game? Can you create a simple calculator? (Youtube: Calculator in Scratch)
Task 1 • Discuss on your table ideas for embedding computing within literacy and numeracy with your pupils at your school • Feedback to group
Topic examples • The poem of Tam o' Shanter - Robert Burns Writing Art Drama / Role Play Food Dance
Topic examples • The poem of Tam o' Shanter - Robert Burns Programming
Topic examples Egyptians: How to make a mummy? Decomposition
Topic examples Vikings: Viking raider
Don’t forget… Control – Create (or simulate) physical systems (Design technology) Data logging – Collect data (Science) Simon Walters http://cymplecy.wordpress.com
Task 2 Split yourselves into KS1, lower KS2 and upper KS2 Identify your main topic areas. For each topic, identify: • What ICT is currently included? • What new Computing objectives are already covered? • Identify possible projects to link with Computer Science learning objectives
Next steps… • Reflect on this activity • Discuss and share your ideas with staff in your school MLT / SLT and pupils (computing champions) • Identify what aspect you need further support with: CAS (forums/network events), www.Code-it.co.uk, www.primarycomputing.co.uk, Twitter
