Prisms Prisms in life: This box is a rectangular prism • A right prism is a three-dimensional solid having two identical, parallel bases. All other faces are rectangles. • The bases of prisms are regular polygons. Dice are cubes. Soccer balls are spheres Northern Hemisphere Southern Hemisphere This cup is a cylinder. A half sphere is a hemi-sphere. We call the upper and lower halves of the Earth hemi-spheres. Another name for this shape is half sphere. This ice cream cone is a cone!
Pyramids • A Pyramid is a three-dimensional solid with a polygon as a base and triangular faces that taper to a point. Pyramids in life: The Egyptian Pyramids This piece of yummy cake is a triangular pyramid! Don’t see it? Maybe this will help! What type of Pyramid are the famous Egyptian pyramids? A: Triangular Pyramid B: Rectangular Pyramid C: Square Pyramid ? ? Click on the blue box next to your answer!
Cross-Sections • A cross-section is the face that results from slicing through a solid shape! QUIZ! What shape would this ice cream cone be if we cut it like this? A: Square B: Circle C: Triangle When this women cuts the carrot it will look like this in the middle: This is the cross-section of this carrot!
Nets Hexagonal Prism • Nets are the 2D drawings that when cut out can be folded into a 3D shape. • Like this: This is a net for of these 3D shapes. Can you guess which one it is??? A: Rectangular Prism B: Square Prism/ Cube C: Hexagonal Prism
Vertices, Faces and Edges Face How many Edges, vertices and faces does a cube have??? • Vertices are corners. A vertex is one corner. • Faces are flat surfaces. • An edge is where two faces meet. A: 6 edges 12 vertices 8 faces B: 8 edges 6 vertices 12 faces C: 12 edges 8 vertices 6 faces Corner Edge
…so you see Emma when you take the edges from the vertices and… Euler’s Rule Oh… I get it now! • Euler’s rule is a rule concerning 3D shapes. Leonhard Euler discovered that when you take the shapes vertices from its edges and added its faces it equals 2. A cube has 8 vertices, 12 edges and 6 faces: 8+6-12=2
