  1. WHAP Essays DBQ- 50 min CCOT-40 min Comp- 40 min

  2. All Essays • Introduction • Thesis (where am I going) • Qualifiers (how am I getting there)- RULE OF 3 • Historical background (why am I going there) • Body paragraphs (at least three) • Conclusion • Has a value- tie up and make the reader say “WOW”

  3. Top Ten Mistakes on AP Essays • NO THESIS • Doesn’t brainstorm/org. • Does not budget time • Provides attribution (background) not p.o.v. • Forgets to additional documents • Write like in English (it’s a brief to Judge Judy) • Does not explain con’t • Minimizes the rubric (rubric is the minimum) • Doesn’t include all documents individually • Puts thesis in wrong place

  4. DBQ TIPS 1. Persuasive Essay- pick a position and prove it 2. ALL Documents- address (1pt), understand (2pts) and give evidence (3pts) • Cite upfront and group (understanding points) • Ex) “Doc. 1,3,5 deals with…” • Explain each document • Ex) Need to distinguish the difference between doc 1, 3, and 5

  5. Aim: What is the AP Exam like? • Do Now: Take one shoe off and place in the front of the room.

  6. 3. Groupings- at least 3 • Subgroups don’t count as groups • May reuse document in diff. groups • Check off documents as you group them

  7. 4. P.O.V.- SOAPSTone • Word choice (why do they use particular words), ex. “we, blessed vs. help) • Don’t write about bias or objective • Doesn’t have to be right, has to be plausible • “why this person produced this document in this form at this time to this audience”

  8. 5. Additional Document • Try to weave into the essay instead of conclusion • Don’t put into thesis • Should have an additional document for EACH groupong • Less than 3-4 sentences, no good • Needs to enhance the thesis (why did it help you answer the question)

  9. Change and Continuity over Time • Make a timeline of your life with 15 events…

  10. CCOT Tips • Understand the questions • Con’t and changes • Mention time frame (EXACTLY as it is written- this gives the framework) • Must cover exact places • STICK TO THE THEME • Brainstorm • Write everything then filter • Rest of the time write the ESSAY • Balance vaguely specific and specifically vague

  11. CCOT EXAMPLE • “Analyze con’t and change in trade networks between Africa and Eurasia from circa 300 to 1450.” Theme, timeframe, specifics • Theme? NETWORKS • TIMEFRAME? Post-classical to voyages of exploration • Specifics? CHANGE (new trading cities, methods of transportation, Islam) CON’T (social status, desire for new goods)

  12. Ways to format CCOT • #1 • Intro • Change • Another Change • Con’t Conclusion • #2 • Intro • Networks (ch and con’t) • Traders • Products • Conclusion

  13. Comparative Essay Tips 1. Intro needs: • Regions, time frame, sim and difference • HAS TO STATE SIM AND DIFFERENCE • Use your THESIS AGAIN in your body paragraphs for 3 points total (qualifiers) • Rule of 3!!!

  14. Comp Example • “For the period from 1500 to 1830, compare North American racial ideologies and their effects on society with Latin American/Caribbean racial ideologies and their effects on society” • List changes and con’t

  15. Comp Methods #1 Intro Sim Sim Diff Conclusion #2 Intro Topic (sim/diff) Topic (sim/diff) Topic (sim/diff) Conclusion
