A trip to Slovenia • Even though Slovenia is a small country, it still has a lot of activities to offer. Some of them are: • Diving • Kayaking, rafting and canoeing • Horseback riding • Paragliding, ballooning and flying • Cycling and mountain biking • Entertainment
Diving • You can dive in all of the Slovenian rivers, lakes and of course the sea, with the exception of the fish hatchery in Lake Bohinj and the shipping lanes and harbour areas. Sports are popular on Lake Bled, in the Kolpa River in Bela Krajina and at the Ankaran, Portorož and Piran, where you can take lessons and even qualify. For more information contact the Slovenian Diving Federation (www.spz.si)Cave diving is also a popular sport in Slovenia but is permitted only under the supervision of a professional guide.
Kayaking, rafting and canoeing • River sports are hugely popular and practised everywhere there is running water, particularly on the Krka River in Dolenjska, the Kolpa River in Bela Krajina, the Sava River in Bohinj, Gorenjska etc. • The Soča river is famous as being one of the best white-water rafting and kayaking rivers in Europe, and it is one of the only half a dozen rivers in the European Alps whose upper waters are unspoiled.
Horseback riding • Slovenia is a nation of horse riders. The world’s most famous horse – the Lipizzaner of the Spanish Riding school in Vienna was first bred at Lipica in Primorska. Among the best and professional places to learn how to ride in Slovenia are the Lipica Stud Farm in Primorska, the Novo Mesto Sport Equestrian Centre and the Hosta Stud Farm at Sela pri Šentjerneju near Kostanjevica na Krki.
Paragliding, ballooning and flying • Paragliding has taken off in Slovenia, especially in Gorenjska around Bohinj and at Bovec, where you can take a tandem flight from the upper cable-car station on Kanin peak and descend on 2000m into the Bovec Valley. The tourist information centre in Ljubljana organises hot air balloon flights year-round.
Cycling and mountain biking • Slovenia is a wonderful country for cycling and mountain biking. • The uncrowded roads around Bled and Bohinj are a joy to cycle on. Other excellent areas for cycling are the Upper Savinja Valley in Štajerska, the Soča Valley in Primorska, the Drava Valley in Koroška and especially the Krka Valley in Dolenjska, which has become something of a cycling centre. Places where you can rent bicycles and/or mountain bikes are listed in the Activities or Getting Around sections of each town. • Excellent source of information is the website of the Alpine Association of Slovenia’s Commission for Mountain Biking. (http://ktk.pzs.si/)
Entertainment • Those who have a lot of energy and are party freaks, Slovenia also offers a diverse night life. • On Slovenian coast there are few night clubs and discotheques. Well known is Ambasada Gavioli in Izola. New acquisition came two years ago when we got the new shopping centre Tuš and they also made a disco named Disco Planet Tuš. • Surely you can also party in Ljubljana (Cirkus, Top, Inbox...), Maribor and so on.
