from LLNL Heavy Ion DOE Review 2004... ALICE-USA LLNL Research Plan ALICE DOE Review - LLNL
LLNL Research Plan Context • Research should benefit from • local expertise • internal funding & resources • university collaborations • Past Highlights • HBT Puzzle analysis on PHENIX • Source Imaging Tools/Analysis • Gordon Bell Prize ALICE DOE Review - LLNL
Initial Work in ALICE • Testbeam analysis (A. Enokizono) • position resolution analysis • Jet Tagging (J. Klay, now at Cal Poly) • LDRD PI FY06-07 • jet cone reconstruction paper • offline coordination • Computing Coordination (R. Soltz) • coordinate across facilities and CERN • collaborate on proposals w/ OSU,UH,LBNL • Livermore Computing Site Coordinator (R.J. Newby) • initiated testing of AliEn software ALICE DOE Review - LLNL
Current Work in ALICE • Test AliEn software on Livermore Computing • LC can provide ~100 cpu sustained, much more in burst mode • Security restrictions • no completely open inbound ports • account holder must “pull trigger” on jobs • and take responsibility for all data disseminated • AliEn can operate within these constraints • determining FTE cost • estimate 0.25 FTE required for site coordinator • additional 0.25 FTE for computing coordinator • Side note on computing • Contacts in computing are extensive • There may be additional room to maneuver under appropriate circumstances ALICE DOE Review - LLNL
ALICE-EmCal Physics Analysis • New idea to combine source imaging with jet finding • PI has had this idea for ~3 years ALICE DOE Review - LLNL
HBT on a JetCone • ALICE is ideal experiment for this analysis • large acceptance • large sample of triggered, fully reconstructed jets • The stage is set • traditional analysis performed for e+e- jets • capability to image non-Gaussian structure established • Build on local expertise • David Brown, source imaging • R.J. Newby, R. Soltz, M. Heffner data analysis • 3D source imaging computationally intensive • Forge collaboration with University Group(s) • M. Lisa, A. Kisiel of OSU to work with us • Allocate remaining 1.0 FTE for this physics • contribute to EmCal jet algorithms as needed • begin with feasibility (p-p), advance to Pb-Pb with EmCal ALICE DOE Review - LLNL
Review Milestones & FTE Planning • LLNL ALICE work falls under Research Plan • FY07 – Develop ALICE-USA computing plan • FY08 – Integrate LLNL resources into ALICE computing challenges • FY09 – Collect first p-p data sets • FY10 – p-p jet reconstruction and imaging feasibility study • FY10 – Collect first Pb-Pb data sets • FY11 – Analyze Pb-Pb data, imaging on jet axis • FY12 – Publish space-time imaging on jet axis ALICE DOE Review - LLNL
