Sustainability topics connect to other domains • Business strategy – Goldman Sachs SUSTAIN report describes metrics for sustainability leaders by industry and its impact on long term profitability • Supply chain – consideration of supply chain important in calculations of carbon footprint (see Matthews et al. 2008) • Ethics – can conduct ethical analysis of Sustainability and Sustainability policies • Biology – lots of Google Earth projects related to Environment, Habitat, Water Conservation and Energy Use • How do all these connect to Information Systems? Technology is key enabler of comprehension of sustainability issues, and enabler of communication of these issues (esp. for any data-driven analyses) AMCIS Sustainability Workshop

What is his background? What are his qualifications on this topic? What organization published this report? What type of work does this organization do? • 2) What is meant by 'peaking?' What is the difference between peaking versus 'running out of oil?' • 3) The paper talks about a liquid fuels crisis. What does that mean? Plans for the future • New assignment for this semester: • Topic: the role of hedging and speculators in the energy market • Business learning community: Use weekly gas price data to create price trend analysis assignment. Class will divide into two groups and will negotiate as suppliers and consumers of fuel, the goal will be to agree to one year fuel supply and price based on selected year (range is from 1980-2007), then will use the next year’s data to ‘test’ the quality of their bids and contracts • More links at http://delicious.com/ProfCDwyer/ AMCIS Sustainability Workshop
