LOGIC 102lesson 01 Sh. Safdar Razi
Syllogisms (al-qadaayaa) • Definition:The complete compound propositional statement that can be described as being true or false. • Types: • Predicative (hamliyya) • Conditional (shartiyya)
Definitions • Predicative (hamliyya):Defn:Proving something to (affirming) or negating it with something else (nafee) • Conditional (shartiyya):Defn:Affirming or negating the connection/relation (nisba) of one argument to another.
2. Conditional • We will quickly look at the conditional before delving into the predicative. • 2 types: • Conjuctive/Connnected (muttassilla) • Disjunctive/Disconnected (munfassilla)
2. Conditional • Conjuctive/Connected (mutassilla)Defn:There is a percentage/relation (nisba) of connection between the two statements or a negation of the relation.Example:If the sun rises then day time exists. If Zayd does not come then you are fired.
2. Conditional 2. Disjunctive/Disconnected (munfassilla):Defn:There is not relation that connects the two, rather there is disconnection and seperation between them or a negation of the seperation.Example:A term is either singular or compound.A human can not be other than a writer or a poet.
Notes: • In normal cases, the syllogism is positive/affirmative (+), and if we negate the predicate (in the predicative argument) or the conjunction or the disjunction (in the conditional argument) then it becomes negative (-). When in the negative (salb --> masloob):- “predicative” --> negated predicative - “conjunctive” --> negated conjunctive- “disjunctive” ---> negated disjunctive
Notes: • +/- are called kayf al-qadiyya (vs. kam = amount). 2. In the conditional conjunctive (mutasilla), its components are called:component/side 1 = muqadamcomponent/side 2 = taalie
1. The Predicative • Arabic: al-qadiyya al-hamliyya • Definition:Proving something or negating it with something else. • The statement is viewed from 3 perspectives (next page).
1. The Predicative • This type of statement is viewed from 3 perspectives, wrt: • A True partial (jus’ie haqeeqie) or a universal (kullie) • The subject being in the positive (moujaba) whether universal (kullie) or partial (juz’ie). • Negation of the subject (salb) or the predicative (‘udool)
1. Perspective 1 • The subject is a true particular (jus’ie haqeeqie) or a universal (kullie) • 4 forms: • Personal (shakhsiyya) • Natural (tabee’iyya) • Unattended (muhmalla) • Specific (mahsoura)
