  3. Stages / Etapas • 1st Trimester/ trimestre– weeks 1 to 12 Germinal, embrion, y primera parte del fetal • 2nd Trimester/ trimestre - weeks 13 to 24 • 3rd Trimester/ trimestre - weeks 25 to 38

  5. Stages of Prenatal Development • Gestation / gestación- lasts about 38 wks. Germinal Stage (zygote/zigoto): (Etapa Germinal) • Zygote implants into the uterus lining… (El zigotose pega a la pared del útero)

  6. Stage of the Embryo/Etapa del Embrión • The endoderm layer- will develop into internal organs & glands Endoderma- la capainterna del embrión; se convierte en el sistema digestivoy los pulmones

  7. 2) The ectoderm layer- become the parts of the body that maintain contact w/ the outside world: • Ectodermo- la capaexterna del embrión; se convierte en el pelo, la capaexterna de la piel, y el sistemanervioso.

  11. Stage of the fetus/ Etapa del feto • The main changes for the fetus are to develop further the already formed organ structures & increase in size & weight • From 3- 4 mos., the formation of the external genitals GenitalesExternos se forman • By 4th mos. mother produces colostrum … calostro

  13. The age of viability- is the point in the pregnancy when the fetus is likely to survive outside the womb… • La edad viable- cuandoel fetopuede ser capaz de sobrevivirfuera del útero.

  14. Procedures to monitor growth • Ultrasound- high-frequency sound waves are bounced off of the fetus’s body which produces an outline of the soft tissue (Ultrasonido- Procedimiento médico que utiliza ondas acústicas para producir un imagen del feto)

  15. Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)- a needle is inserted into the placenta (vaginally), chorion cells are removed as a genetic screening of the fetus; • Muestra de vellosidadcoriónica- Procedimiento medico en el cual se obtiene y se analizaunamuestra del tejidofino del corion

  16. Amniocentesis- a needle is inserted through the mother’s abdomen into the amniotic sac. • La Amniocentesis-Procedimiento medico en el que se obtiene y esanalizadaunamuestra del líquidoamniótico.
