  3. The culture • Same rules as in Africa • Respect yourself • Respect others • No violence, no drugs • Keep your grades up • Emphasis on African-American culture • Posters of black historical figures • Student-created art • African dress

  4. The teachers • Passionate: Love the subjects they teach • Personal: Willing to share themselves • Tough: Unwilling to let one kid drop out • Street savvy: “Been there, done that”

  5. The curriculum • Modeled after Chicago’s Books ‘n Hoops program • Combines mentorship, academics, dialogue, workshops, athletics, and real-world skills development • Focuses on: • Literacy • Study skills • Basketball skills development • College preparation • Race relations • Teamwork and leadership • Social development

  6. The families and community • Hold frequent parent/teacher conferences • Sponsor family get-togethers • Create community mentorship program • Team with Baltimore Inner City Outings

  7. The rewards • Students who successfully complete the academic year: • Get a two-week vacation in Kenya • Receive college scholarships
