Family Background • Siblings- Oldest of 3 sisters • Parents- John and Anna Anderson • Her dad was a loader at the Reading Terminal Market • Her mom was a teacher in Virginia • Her dad, died from a wound to the head that he received while at work • It was hard for them all when he died, because soon after they moved in with John’s parents and Anna found a job cleaning, laundering and scrubbing floors.

  3. Education • Attended William Penn High School • She was focusing on a commercial career until she decided music was her passion, so she transferred to a South Philadelphia High School. From there on she focused on singing frequently, often at her school assemblies. • She graduated High School at 18 • She applied many times at a music school, but in the end was coldly rejected because of her color.

  4. Career • She became a singer at an early age. • In fact her first gig was at a local Baptist church in which her family went to. • She joined the junior choir when she was only 6. • They nicknamed her “The Baby Contralto.” • Her father bought a piano when she was just 8 and because they couldn’t afford any lessons for her, she taught herself.

  5. Why so Famous? • She sang for Eleanor Roosevelt who later resigned from the Daughters of the American Revolution to help her. • After that she sang at tons of different places. • It still wasn’t easy though.

  6. Her impact on U.S History • She was One of the first African Americans to sing in front of the First Lady. • Because she was an African American her singing career was difficult…but that didn’t stop her.
