“If There Be Sorrow” Mari Evans If there be sorrow let it be for things undone… undreamed unrealized unattained to these add one; Love withheld… …restrained In this space, you will be choosing a key scene from the short story and write it from Doodle’s perspective. Key scenes? Example: pg. 349 Within a few months I had learned to walk well, and my go-cart was put in the barn beside my mahogany coffin. I try not to think about the day Brother took me up there and made me touch it. I still have nightmares about that day, but mommy keeps telling me that Brother didn’t really mean it. Our trips to Old Woman Swamp were fun, adventures. From the beginning , I was a much better liar than brother. If anybody stopped to listen to us, they would have admitted us to Dix Hill. Brother’s lies were scary, involved, and usually pointless , but mine were crazy. My favorite lie was one that I created about a boy named Peter. He had a pet peacock with a ten-foot tale. Peter wore a golden robe that glittered so brightly when he walked through the sunflowers that they turned away from the sun to face him. When Peter was ready to go to bed, his peacock spread his magnificent tail, enfolding Peter gently like a closing go-to-sleep flower, burying him in the gloriously iridescent, rustling vortex. Brother didn’t know, but Peter was a better more normal version of me, like he would have wanted. The Peacock was him – I never told Brother because I really believed he loved me, but I wish he could be more like the Peacock. In this space you should translate the meaning of the poem (tell me what the poem is about). Then, tell me how it relates to “The Scarlet Ibis”
