What Is Debate? • Complex-many facets involved • There are rules established to ensure that both sides have equal opportunity to present positions that are backed by some type of evidence and logical analysis.
Roots of Debate-Ancient Greece • Protagoras-”father of debate”-argued pros and cons of issues in Greek society • “sophistry”-arguments defective in subtle ways • More concerned with delivery/audience effect than truth
