Haiti Wind Project (Summer 2011) By Kacie O’Neil
Introduction • Energy Grand Challenges • Professor Catherine Peters (CEE) was the advisor • Internship focused on Sustainable Energy and easy deployment • I focused mainly on structural analysis
Initial Challenge • Generate a large amount of power (kW) • Parts had to fit into a standard shipping container • Easily deployable wind generator
Background • Standard Shipping container holds: • Easily deployable wind turbine • Solar panels to supplement wind turbine • Easily deployable and possibly telescoping tower to hold turbine • Turbine equipment including generator, battery, etc. • Originally intended for cases such as disaster relief (Haiti)

Goals for Internship • Main Goal: build/design a prototype • Half scale model • For a competition in April • Looking for commercially made parts • This included: • Finding a turbine • Choosing a battery • Finding a mast system that can fit in the “shipping container” (half size model) • Figuring out how to ship the prototype
Constraints • Size of parts they have to fit into a box of limited size • Weightwhatever goes up in the air must be supported on the ground • Deployment needs to be set up/put up by humans (no machines) • Construction must be able to be packed up and shipped elsewhere • Cost we currently have a very limited budget
Current design Haiti Challenge
Current Design • Combines wind and solar power • The purpose of the solar is make the power generation more constant • Intentions: provide energy and possibly a source of income to pay for repair costs
SAP Computer Modeling

Conclusion • Prototype was planned but not built (no space during the summer) • Learned a lot about structural analysis • Gained valuable experience working on a research project learning about how to revise plans to make them better
