  1. Haiti Wind Project (Summer 2011) By Kacie O’Neil

  2. Introduction • Energy Grand Challenges • Professor Catherine Peters (CEE) was the advisor • Internship focused on Sustainable Energy and easy deployment • I focused mainly on structural analysis

  3. Initial Challenge • Generate a large amount of power (kW) • Parts had to fit into a standard shipping container • Easily deployable wind generator

  4. Background • Standard Shipping container holds: • Easily deployable wind turbine • Solar panels to supplement wind turbine • Easily deployable and possibly telescoping tower to hold turbine • Turbine equipment including generator, battery, etc. • Originally intended for cases such as disaster relief (Haiti)

  5. How the project has changed Vertical Axis Wind Turbines Horizontal Axis Turbine http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.manufacturer.com/upload/product/6414997/Vertical%2BAxis%2BWind%2BTurbine%2BGenerator_0_detail.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.manufacturer.com/product/m6414997-Vertical%2BAxis%2BWind%2BTurbine%2BGenerator.html&usg=__61kxs-7R1sk8wxRLNSKdb6Nfc5Y=&h=400&w=300&sz=10&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=c7YpWGW-l5qpyM:&tbnh=163&tbnw=110&ei=PK4lTtr6FcmBgAeLnbHvBQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dvertical%2Baxis%2Bwind%2Bturbine%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1599%26bih%3D789%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=1029&vpy=226&dur=1625&hovh=259&hovw=194&tx=104&ty=134&page=1&ndsp=39&ved=1t:429,r:15,s:0&biw=1599&bih=789 http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://wpcore.smallwt.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Horizontal-Axis-Wind-Turbine.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.smallwindtips.com/2009/11/vertical-axis-wind-turbines-vs-horizontal-axis-wind-turbines/&usg=__pmqWPIk4qVNEK1gL0OLzYxwXzY8=&h=262&w=200&sz=7&hl=en&start=0&zoom=0&tbnid=omdzP80u4Qj8fM:&tbnh=112&tbnw=85&ei=VK8lTqi9AZLUgAeW8snvBQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhorizontal%2Baxis%2Bwind%2Bturbine%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26biw%3D1599%26bih%3D789%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=1082&vpy=443&dur=1719&hovh=112&hovw=85&tx=64&ty=52&page=1&ndsp=34&ved=1t:429,r:23,s:0&biw=1599&bih=789 http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.suite101.com/821112_com_quietrev01.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.suite101.com/view_image_articles.cfm/821114&usg=__koSp_1IqWb05hsrk2wPAS7iE1Dg=&h=818&w=567&sz=426&hl=en&start=39&zoom=1&tbnid=2fisqsurIc-eNM:&tbnh=180&tbnw=122&ei=PK4lTtr6FcmBgAeLnbHvBQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dvertical%2Baxis%2Bwind%2Bturbine%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1599%26bih%3D789%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=988&vpy=444&dur=96&hovh=270&hovw=187&tx=70&ty=195&page=2&ndsp=32&ved=1t:429,r:13,s:39&biw=1599&bih=789

  6. Goals for Internship • Main Goal: build/design a prototype • Half scale model • For a competition in April • Looking for commercially made parts • This included: • Finding a turbine • Choosing a battery • Finding a mast system that can fit in the “shipping container” (half size model) • Figuring out how to ship the prototype

  7. Constraints • Size of parts they have to fit into a box of limited size • Weightwhatever goes up in the air must be supported on the ground • Deployment  needs to be set up/put up by humans (no machines) • Construction  must be able to be packed up and shipped elsewhere • Cost  we currently have a very limited budget

  8. Current design Haiti Challenge

  9. Current Design • Combines wind and solar power • The purpose of the solar is make the power generation more constant • Intentions: provide energy and possibly a source of income to pay for repair costs

  10. SAP Computer Modeling

  11. Examples of Stress on a SAP Model

  12. SAP Models Material

  13. SAP Model

  14. What I was modeling http://www.alumatower.com/new/gallery/index.php?action=showGallery&galleryid=14

  15. Deformed Shape

  16. Conclusion • Prototype was planned but not built (no space during the summer) • Learned a lot about structural analysis • Gained valuable experience working on a research project learning about how to revise plans to make them better
