Economics • Growth Rate: 0.8 in ‘08; 2.9 in ‘09; and -5.1 in ’10 • Unemployment Rate: 40.6 % (2010) • Wealth and Consumption Distribution: Lowest 10%: 0.7 Highest 10% 47.7 (2010) GINI: 59.2 (2001) 7TH in the world 80% of population is below the poverty line U.S. Relations: Friendly: specific U.S. Policy is designed to help better the condition of Haiti

  5. Industries • Biggest Industries are sugar refining, textiles, flour milling, and cement. • Agriculture includes coffee, mangoes, sugarcane, rice, and corn

  6. Government • Type: Republic • Independence: 1804 from France • Independence Day: January 1st • Capital: Port-au-Prince Haitian National Palace

Historical Events • Haitian Revolution (1791-1804): Only successful rebellion in the New World during slavery. • Haitian Boat People reach Florida (1972-1981): The first wave of immigrating “boat people” landed in Florida • Haitian Earthquake (2010): January 12th, the largest earthquake Haiti has ever experienced (7.0)

  8. Wyclef Jean • Wyclef Jean is a 41-year-old musician, record producer, and a semi-politician. • First hip-hop group was the Fugees • Filed for 2010 Haitian Presidential Election, but was ruled ineligible since his primary residence was not in Haiti for the past five years.

  9. Issues and Culture • Drugs: Haiti is used as a transshipment point for Caribbean cocaine on its way to the U.S.. Colombian narcotics are also filtered through Haiti • Poverty: Poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and 78% of Haitians live on less than $2 a day • Health: Healthy life expectancy is 55 years for women and 53 years for men. • Culture: 80% Roman Catholic and 16% Protestant
