  1. Junior Church Boot Camp Margaret Pritchard Houston Children’s Mission Enabler

  2. Today: • Introductions • Triumphs and struggles • Bible basics and stories • Tea break • Getting physical • Behaviour management • Prayer • Issue Park • Resources

  3. Bible Basics Attach the pictures to the string in order, from Genesis to Revelation. (Idea from Revd. Ally Barrett)

  4. Six-word stories (http://www.sixwordstories.net/) Born a twin; Graduated only child. Strangers. Friends. Best friends. Lovers. Strangers. Dot in the sky. Dead pixel. “Wrong number,” says a familiar voice. Voyager still transmitted, but Earth didn’t. How would you rewrite the Bible as a 6-word story?

  5. STORY How do we tell these stories to our children? • In order • As stories, not morals • With room for play

  6. Gretchen Wolff Pritchard – Offering the Gospel to Children • From “once upon a time” to “happily ever after.” • As a source of imaginative power and wonder. • Not just wrapping paper for a moral that is extracted for adult approval. • Not in need of being jazzed up and given Shiny! New! Wrapping paper! • The “kiddie gospel” – babies and flowers, Jesus’s resurrection as “his friends were so happy they got their friend back,” etc. • The power of “I WONDER …”

  7. GETTING PHYSICAL • Storytelling and games Bibliologue Beulah Land Godly Play Story Stations (e.g. Exodus, Holy Week) 10-Second Objects Movement pairs Conscience alley Concentration (can be done with almost any story) We are marching … Simple signs – Father, Jesus, forgive, thank you

  8. What makes children act out? • Special needs • Boredom • Emotional/home difficulties • “This isn’t for me.” • Negative behaviour gets attention

  9. What messages do we want to send at church? • Special needs: you are loved/appreciated/welcomed as you are. • Boredom: this is a place where interesting and meaningful things happen. • Emotional/home difficulties: you are safe here. • “This isn’t for me”: you get a say in what happens here. • Negative behaviour gets attention: we notice you in positive ways and correct negative behaviour with love.

  10. How can we send those messages? (Not a comprehensive list) • Chill-out zones can help with those with ASD – talk to parents/carers, find out what works. • Use a variety of activities – and have some free choice time, not a specific craft that HAS to be done (especially done in a certain way. Art activities – open-ended.) • Enough and more than enough, consistency of messages, clearly explained set of rewards and consequences (which make sense). Warnings, not jumping straight to consequences. Never threaten a consequence you can’t follow through on. • Group agreements. • Positive behaviour management – correct the behaviour, not the person. “Show me how well you can work with your partner.”

  11. Music and prayer: Each church has its own musical tradition and style. Worship Workshop is a terrific musical resource (worshipworkshop.org.uk) – includes teaching and backing tracks for a variety of styles of music. Hallelu- Hallelu- Hallelu- Hallelujah (on Worship Workshop) O Lord, Hear My Prayer (lots of Taize on YouTube)

  12. Music and prayer: In groups, share one prayer activity you’ve done that’s worked really well. If you can’t come up with one, use some of the objects on the tables to come up with a prayer activity you could use.

  13. Issue Park
