  3. Facts on population • EU25 population will continue to rise until 2025 and then start to fall (Eurostat) • Working age population expected to decrease by 52 million by 2050 (Eurostat) • EU needs 75 million immigrants by (Eurostat) • 2050.(French interior ministry, 2002)

  4. Arguments FOR immigration • Aging population • Immigrants are ready to accept jobs that are ignored by current population (shit jobs) • Immigrants help their families in third world countries (send money etc.) • Immigration can help boost economic growth

  5. Arguments AGAINST immigration • There is already unemployment • Most immigrants are unskilled and -educated • GDP per capita may fall when population grows • Competition on the labour market reduces wages and may worsen working conditions

  6. Current policies and practises • On national level • Many countries are imposing stricter policies (mandatory language exams etc.) • Protection against illegal immigration (Spain, Italy, France) • Need for labour • On european level • Tampere agenda, aim to unify immigration policies • Regional differences: problems are worst for Spain, Italy and France.
