ACT III MOVIE CRITIQUE Leana Hernandez Camila Tabilo Denise Casanova Juan Fernando Gomez Fernando Rodriguez
Introduction Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Many directors have been inspired by this play. They have made movies and adaptations of the actual script. Three movie versions based on this play are Zefferelli’s version, Lurhmann’s version, and the broadway musical West Side Story. In Act III of the play, there are many differences and simliarities between this three versions. The following tables represent the main differences between the three.
Similarities • They all end up killing the best friend of Romeo and someone in Juliet’s family • In all of them Romeo and Juliet show their love. • Romeo always regrets killing Tybalt afterwards • Juliet cries after she finds out that Tybalt is dead and Romeo killed him. • Romeo is furious at Tybalt for killing Mercutio and he takes revenge on him.
Conclusion In our opinion, the best version for this act is the Luhrmann version. It represents the problem with more detail and more feelings than the other plays. In the Zefferelli version, the actors don’t show as much emotions, and in West Side Story the dancing during fights and singing in serious moments drains the seriousness out of the problems. The Luhrmann version is more exciting and is the best to represent Act III of Romeo and Juliet.
