Science Fact of the Day: Everyone's tongue print is different.
CO: I will identify and describe the phases of mitosis. I will evaluate the importance of the cell cycle for the growth of an organism.LO: I will write notes about Mitosis. I will model the phases of Mitosis with play-doh.
Think-Pair-Share • How will a cell spend most of it’s life?
Cell Cycle Re-cap • G0 • G1 • S phase • G2 • M phase • Remember that G1, S, and G2 together are known as interphase and a cell spends most of it’s life in interphase.
Think-Pair-Share • Why are cells small? Why would it be bad for them to grow too large?
Reasons for cell division • To prevent them from being inefficient in getting nutrients • surface area to volume ratio • To reproduce • For example: bacteria can reproduce asexually • To repair damaged tissue • For example: if you get a paper cut • To grow an organism
Mitosis: division of the nucleus*only occurs in BODY cellsCytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm
Interphase DNA is in the form of chromatin • Chromatin is DNA tightly coiled around proteins. • It looks kind of like spaghetti
Prophase: chromosomes (coiled DNA) are visible and the nuclear envelope is gone. DNA is in the form of chromosomes
Metaphase: the chromosomes line up across the center (middle) of the cell.
Anaphase:centromeressplit and chromosomes move away into two groups near the poles of the cell So, each chromosome consists of two identicalsister chromatids. Each pair of sister chromatids is attached at an area called the centromere.
Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm, occurs after Mitosis is complete
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Always remember… P M A T
Let’s practice… • On the back of your page, number 1-5. • On the next slide, you will see 5 pictures. • You need to figure out what phase each one is in and write it down.

Summary • In 23 words explain how mitosis is related to organism growth. Use the words identical, divide, DNA
