Based on a presentation by Jamie Peerson (January 2014) AVL ResearchAlabama Virtual Library
What is AVL? • AVL is a $3 million database that is funded for public school (k-college) students in Alabama. It is entirely funded by the state based on the amount of times that students access it. This free resource will not be funded next year if we don’t show them that we use it this year.
Go to www.avl.lib.al.us • Add AVL to your favorites right now!
AVL Information Relevance • Go to Student Resources tab, then Middle School tab. • AVL is a research database aligned by teachers and librarians to the curriculum for Alabama (course of study standards)
AVL Information Reliability • Who is allowed to post something on the internet? • What is plagiarism? • How can we determine the most reliable websites for information? (even “.edu” sites can publish incorrect or plagiarized information submitted by students)
SIRS DISCOVER • Great database for middle school researchers. It is not so large that it forces you to be very specific to find what you need, nor is it so small that the information you find is very limited and general. Let’s conduct a SIRS Search • Type in “Youth Service Projects” • Look at reading levels, graphics, and photos • Find “White House and Nation Honor Youth Volunteers”.
“White House and Nation Honor Youth Volunteers” article • Find the following features: • Email • Listening tab • Citation (the address so that someone could look up your source) • Let’s pretend this is not exactly what we needed. • Click on the subject (apple icon) and search for related subject categories (volunteerism, youth volunteers in social service)
Britannica School Middle • “widely recognized as the ultimate reliable source for fast facts” • Great starting point for gaining background information on a big/general topic • Let’s practice! • Type in World War II (notice that this huge topic is summarized in just a few pages) • Check out where to find email, print, listen, citation, and reading levels (1, 2, and 3)
Continued Now, type in “Youth Service Projects” Are the results limited? Remember, this database helps you gain background knowledge. It is better if you need to look at broader topics. For fun, search for your favorite animal. (panda, dolphin, Labrador retriever, etc.)
EBSCO Student Research Center Go through Middle School Databases to get to this website. Ebsco is a huge magazine company that has acquired the rights to a huge amount of print research, biographical, information, etc. (click through tabs to see all that is available) This is a large database, so it should work well with this research project.
ESRC Search 1) Uncheck the unnecessary information types by clicking on the radial check boxes for • Photos • Primary source (meaning directly from the source) • State reports • Country facts • Bios • Search “Youth Service Projects” Examine article “Teens Taking Charge” (abstract vs. full text)
Other helpful databases • Career Library (for researching careers) • Encyclopedia of Alabama (for local and civil rights research) • Britannica Ebooks(reference books)
