National Picture • The United States is experiencing a shortage of professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers. • In the last 20 years, STEM careers grew four times faster than others. • In the past 10 years, the United States slipped from 3rd to 17th in graduating engineers world-wide.

Our Community • Jobs in our community with Science, Technology, and Math skill requirements • Petrochemical, Process Technology, and Non-Destructive Testing • Medical and Allied Health • NASA and Aerospace fields • Advanced Manufacturing • Energy • Information Technology • Port of Houston/Maritime Industry • Engineering and Drafting • Automotive Technology • Diesel Technology

Our Industry’s Key Issues • Lack of awareness of excellent industry jobs • Huge shortage of skilled and educated workforce. • Need to “upskill” current employees • Depending on the industry and company: • 40%-65% of current technical workforce eligible to retire in next 10 years • 45%-75% of current engineers and senior managers eligible to retire in next 10 years

What we’re doing • Training in-district independent school district educators and students • Online curriculum development for STEM classes • Developing virtual science learning modules • Online curriculum development for middle and high school teachers • Dual Credit • Early College High School • Shared Counselors with District High Schools

Key Features of the Bond For the 2009 - 2019 Master Plan, the College has identified its greatest needs to be as follows: • Science facilities on all three San Jacinto College campuses • Allied Health facilities on all three campuses • Renovate auto and welding technology on Central • Create a Workforce Training Center • Update libraries on all three campuses • Create student support services areas to support teaching and learning initiatives • Renovate physical education facilities
