  1. The HAARP Project By Ted Gerken

  2. Introduction • High frequency Active Auroral Research Project • Located in Gakona Alaska • Investigates the properties and responses of the Ionosphere • Two main means • Active experimentation • Passive observation

  3. IRI • Ionospheric Research Instrument • Antenna transmitter array • 180 crossed dipole antennas • 2.8-10MHz • Capable of 3.6MW

  4. Airglow • Created using IRI • A small portion of the ionosphere is heated • The image is slowly integrated

  5. Telescopic Imaging • Airglow is viewed using highly sensitive telescope • Image captured with highly integrated CCD camera • Telescope in special “cold room” of optical shelter

  6. Riometer • 4 “yagi” type recievers • Tuned to 30 MHz • Scans the sky for EM Noise • By comparing to “quiet day” graph, you can detect solar activity

  7. Riometer Plot

  8. Induction Magnetometer • Measures magnetic field • Signals are centered at 1 Hz, with higher levels filtered • 3 sensors (North, East, and Vertical) • Sensitive to a few pico Telsas

  9. Fluxgate Magnetometer • Measures Earth’s magnetic field • Again, uses 3 axis • 8 samples per second • All data is archived for access on the web

  10. VLF Antenna • Two loops (N-S and E-W) • Each loop in the shape of an equilateral triangle • Supported by 30 ft tall tower

  11. Safety • The antenna array directs the E-M field straight up. • A ground screen further reflects the field away from the ground. • The largest field approaches the safety limit • The closest publicly accessible area, 3,000 ft. from the emitter, experiences a field 1/10,000th of the allowed maximum.

  12. Effect of Atmosphere • The IRI directs large amount of energy on a small amount of the atmosphere. • 10,000 times as much fluctuation happens daily caused by solar activity. • The earth’s magnetic field is 10,000,000 times as strong as the fluctuations caused by HAARP.

  13. Angel’s Don’t Play This HAARP • HAARP has received a lot of controversy • A large portion of funding for HAARP comes from the DoD • Several theories have arisen • Weather controlling • Mind controlling • Destruction of the Ozone layer • Most DoD applications involve defense.
