Cystic Fibrosis is an incurable, hereditary disease that mostly affects the white population. • It is one of the most common genetic diseases in today’s society • It is caused by a cystic fibrosis gene found on chromosome 7 that causes the inefficient expression of the CFTR protein.
How is it detected? • Cystic Fibrosis can be detected by neonatal screening • Clinical diagnosis via the sweat test • Gene Testing • Genetic Counselling can be provided for parents concerned of the likelihood of passing on cystic fibrosis to their children
What are the Symptoms? • Malnutrition • Persistent, chronic lung infections • Poor growth weight • Bowel obstructions
