  2. Calling Officials: • Stop the clock • Get player number • Give signal if appropriate • If multiple flags, get together, make a decision and one of you go to the referee • Report clearly, concisely, completely, and calmly. • Result of the play • Foul • Team • Player number • Offer enforcement

  3. Referee • Get information and give prelim quickly • Don’t move too far, coaches and press box will find you • If your flag, give immediate prelim. You can announce and administer simple fouls such as a false start • Make decision for the team if obvious • Tell the Umpire the enforcement spot, direction, and distance • Two sets of signals when teams consider options or crew discusses • Stop walking and running around. It gives the appearance of confusion or indecision

  4. Umpire • Find out what the flag is for ASAP • Become an expert in penalty administration • If decision is needed get a captain • Get the ball • Listen to Referee’s instructions • Walk off and put ball down quickly • Check with wings for distance • Help Referee with clock status

  5. Linesman • If prior to the snap, give the signal to referee. Only come in if necessary to discuss action or communicate player number • Communicate with head coach – foul and anything unusual, such as loss of down or clock status near end of a half • Walk with the Umpire • Confirmation number 1 with administration of penalties

  6. Line Judge • If prior to the snap, give the signal to referee. Only come in if necessary to discuss action or communicate player number • Communicate with head coach – foul and anything unusual, such as loss of down or clock status near end of a half • Walk with the Umpire • Confirmation number 2 with administration of penalties • Signal to Referee clock status

  7. Back Judge • Use signals on obvious fouls • Cover the flag for other officials • Communicate status ball/result of the play • Communicate numbers to benches • Maintain clock awareness • Confirmation number 3

  8. Referee After Administration • Make sure officials and chains are in position • Mark ball ready for play without undue delay • Don’t rush the ready if players seem confused or disorganized as a result of the penalty

  9. Results • More professional pace • Appear more confident • Less criticism • Reduction in game time • Save steps • Improve your ratings
